Originally the division was formed on November of 1918 in the state of Mississippi just before the end of World War I. The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was formed in 1942 at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. It saw action in the Normandy landings as part of part of the 101st Airborne Division.
